Background

With a population of over 12 million, or about 10 percent of Japan's population, Tokyo is by far the country's most populous and most densely populated prefecture.

Location

This issue of population is occurring all over the country of japan, but it is mainly occurring in the capital city Tokyo. This place is very crowded and I think that in 15-20 more years that japan is going to have to expand.

Development

One time period that is important is the Edo period, before the city of Tokyo was called Tokyo is was known as Edo. Edo, grew into the largest city in the world with a population topping one million by the 18th century. As time passed more and more people came to Edo making the population in the largest city even worse.

Impact

• Effects on people: The population of Tokyo for 2009 is 35 million people, but that includes the 23 prefectures associated with Tokyo.
• Effects on the environment: In the natural parks of Tokyo, the balance between protection and utilization of nature has been threatened due to problems caused by “making use of” nature.
• Effects on the economics: The Japanese have created "New Land" by filling in shallow wetlands with dirt and rubble.
• Effects on the government: By building up and down, the Japanese make effort use of limited city land.

Future

If more and more people have kids or people move to Tokyo, the more crowded it'll become. More space would be needed and natural resourses would run out fast. Japan has 6,852 islands, most of the islands are mountainous and valcanos, and a lot of them can't sustain life.

Big Picture

Since most of Japan is made of mountainous terrain it is very hard for the citizens to expand and live in diffrent and new environment. This is also why Tokyo(Japans capital) is the one of the most populated cities. I think that for a geographic concept that Japan should be categorized under population growth becaues that is what is happening , more and more people are being born each year and japan just keeps getting more over crowded. Soon Japan is going to become so over crowded that not many more people will be able to live there...unless the people of Japan find another place to live.
